“There is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats” – Kenneth Grahame
So it seems you have found us! Is that by estimated position, or a three-point bearing? Or just a GPS fix? Nevermind… Welcome to the University of Sussex Sailing Club (or USSC for short)
If you’re interested in boats, in sails, in the sea, in racing, in cruising, in keelboats, in dinghies or anything vaguely similar, this is the place for you!
Linked with Sussex Yacht Club in nearby Shoreham, we’ve created a place where anyone and everyone can go sailing – from the complete “never been on a boat before” beginner to experienced racer, and everything in between. We provide all of the necessary equipment, instruction and access to the water! Membership includes the ability to sail dinghies with us on Wednesday afternoons, and yachts at the weekends.
All of our sailing takes place out of SYC’s Southwick clubhouse. We meet at Falmer Station, and take the train just a few stops into Brighton and back out to Southwick (it’s not too far!), then make the most of our time out on the water – weather and daylight permitting, of course.
On Wednesdays, we sail dinghies of all shapes and sizes; toppers, picos, lasers, and more, all sailing inside the shelter of Shoreham harbour. We usually split the group by previous experience, so beginners can be taken through the basics and get comfortable with the support of our qualified instructors, before joining the rest of the fleet on the water!
At the weekends, we sail yachts! Students are placed as crew on various boats owned by the friendly members of SYC, and take part in the seasonal “around the cans” racing series. As with dinghies, we aim to place everyone on a boat which is suited to their previous experience – so beginners are placed on more chilled-out cruising boats with skippers that can give plenty of guidance!
SYC is also a RYA training centre, so there are plenty of opportunities to gain qualifications. In previous years, some of our members have completed powerboat, safety boat, first aid at sea, day skipper theory (and more!) training at the club.
Apart from sailing, our club’s activities also include:
- Excellent socials (because who does rowdy parties better than pirates, I mean, sailors?)
- Taking part in inter-university team racing events (we don’t take things too seriously.. they’re a lot of fun!)
- Attending lots of sailing(y) events (the boat/dinghy show, SYC’s Royal Escape, to name a few..)
- Our legendary summer yacht trip (ending the year with a week away, sailing around lots of beautiful Greek islands with your sailing pals)
The club’s committee post announcements and the latest news about the club to our Facebook page – make sure you’re following to keep up to date with what we’re up to!
We also have a members group, where we post our events and weekly signup sheets – please feel free to join!
Also if you want to see the latest in what we’re getting up to – make sure you’re following us on Instagram.
And finally, if you have any questions – anything at all! – please don’t hesitate to ask. We can be reached most easily on Facebook/Instagram, but you can also email if you like!
All of our clubs and societies are run by a committee.
A committee is a team of people that lead, organise and publicise a group within your Students’ Union.
It can be really rewarding as well as being a great way to gain experience and invaluable skills for your future career.
